Hobart Metro runs bus services within the Hobart area with most buses terminating near the main post office on Elizabeth Street and also in Macquarie Street and Franklin Square. Bus information is available from the Metroshop inside the General Post Office on Elizabeth Street. Single tickets start at A$1.20 and go up to A$2.80 depending on the route. Off-peak day-passes are available for A$3.10.
There are a number of major car rental companies in Hobart, many offering special deals. Discuss your travelling plans with the car rental company; sometimes restrictions apply to the conditions of hire for certain routes, other journeys off main roads and interstate travel. There is also a ferry service that offers transport to a number of sights around Hobart working on a hop on hop off basis. The Wrest Point Wanderer travels between 10:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
The most economic way to get around Hobart’s city centre is on foot! As most attractions and destinations are within close proximity to each other, they are easily accessible by foot. Taxis or self drive transport are options when you have less time or wish to travel further from the city. There is an excellent bus service in the city that connects all the places of interest.
Clean, comfortable and efficient taxi services operate in Tasmanian cities and major towns. As a guide to prices, the average flag fall is A$2.60 with trips charged at around A$1.10 per kilometre.
