Buses

  • General: There is a smartcard system on the buses (cheng2 che1 shua1 ka1) that is valid on public buses (gong3 gong4 chi4 che1), mini buses (siao3 gong3 gond4 chi4 che1) and the trams (you3 kui3 dian4 che1). The smartcard or "shua ka" can be bought from "shang ye ying hang" – Commercial Bank. A deposit of RMB30 is needed to purchase the card. To revalue the card, go to any of the Commercial Bank branches. Using the card is easy and saves the trouble of always looking for coins.
  • Operating hours: From 5:30 a.m. – 10:40 p.m.
  • Average charge: Fares range from RMB1 – RMB2. Normal fares within the city with the smartcard will cost RMB0.80. For the mini-buses, it will cost about RMB2.

Car Rental

  • General: There are a number of car rental companies to choose from. To hire a car, one has to be above 18 years old and own a valid driving license.
  • Operating hours: Can vary, some operate booking 24 hours.
  • Average charge: Charges can vary. It is best to get quotes from a few different companies to find the best value hire.

Taxis

  • General: There are two main taxi companies in Dalian. One operates red taxis and the other white taxis. There are large numbers of taxis around the city, so it is very easy to get one.
  • Operating hours: 24 hours.
  • Average charge: RMB1.20 per kilometre with base price RMB8 from 5:00 a.m. – 10:00 p m and RMB10.40 from 10:00 p.m. – 5:00 a.m.

Tram

  • General: The tram-line bus in Dalian is the only one of its kind in China.
  • Operating hours: From 4:00 a.m.– 11:50 p.m.
  • Average charge: RMB1 for a single fare.
