A becak is a tricycle, which is pedalled by a man where one or two passengers sit in front. This transport has been around for 40 years, but is slowly disappearing and currently only available in certain areas. Agree on the fare with the driver before he begins the journey.
There are three main terminals in Jakarta servicing inter-cities. Some buses are air-conditioned; choose only Patas (express) buses, if possible. Damri buses run every 30 – 60 minutes to five city terminals. Fare is around 6,000 rupiahs for Patas (express), around 20,000 rupiahs for Damri and the journey takes around 45 – 60 minutes.
There are several car rental companies around and motorbikes for rent also. A license is needed to rent and driving is on the left. Chauffeur is optional.
There are several domestic airlines (Citilink, Sriwijaya, Batik Air & Lion Air) and national carrier, Garuda operating on domestic routes that has several flights daily to destinations such as Bali, Medan and Manado. Shuttle flights to Surabaya and Semarang are also available.
All licensed taxis run by meters. For safety concerns, it is advisable to only take Silver Bird or Blue Bird taxis. If travelling from the airport, an airport surcharge and toll road will be added to the fare.
